Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled pottery material of high purity and high density with outstanding thermal stability, by reaction between water and CaO which was produced by thermal decomposition of high-purity CaCO3 powder under an inert atmosphere followed by reaction of the resulting Ca(OH)2 suspension with phosphoric acid. CONSTITUTION:Lime (CaO) produced by thermal decomposition of CaCO3 powder with a purity of >=99.8% in an inert atmosphere at 800-1,300 deg.C for 0.5-10hr is cooled to 500 deg.C or lower in an inert atmosphere followed by addition of 10-100pts.wt. per pt.wt. of CaO of water and carrying out reaction at 0-80 deg.C for 1-24hr while stirring at high speed to prepare a milky Ca(OH)2 suspension with an average particle size of 0.05-1mum. Thence, this suspension is allowed to react with an aqueous phosphoric acid solution of a concentration of 1-10wt.% in one inert atmosphere at 0-50 deg.C for 0.5-200hr to produce hydroxyapatite. This hydroxyapatite is filtered and dried followed by pressurized forming and calcining at 850-1,400 deg.C for 0.5-5hr, thus obtaining the objective hydroxyapatite pottery material with an element ratio Ca/P of 1.67-1.69, average crystal diameter of 4-20mum and density of 3.14-3.16g/cm<3>. This hydroxyapatite pottery material is such that the formation of whitlockite cannot be observed even if calcined at 1,350 deg.C for 1hr.
