Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable formation of silicon nitride-based ceramic having high fracture strength and fracture toughness, by blending a silicon nitride matrix with fibers consisting essentially of silicon carbide in a specific ratio of long fibers and short fibers thereof. CONSTITUTION:Fiber reinforced silicon nitride-based ceramic wherein fibers consisting essentially of silicon carbide are dispersed into a silicon nitride matrix, using the fibers having the following constitution. Namely 10-60wt.% sum of long fibers having >=200mum length and >=10mum diameter and short fibers having <=200mum length and <=10mum diameter is added to the matrix and the ratio of the long fibers in the fibers is adjusted to 20-80wt.%.
