Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the lowering of the contrast of a picture and to improve the quality of the picture by forming a polarizing means on the surface of an optical reflection screen. CONSTITUTION: Light from a light source 23 is condensed, polarized to be linearly polarized light by the polarizing means 35, transmitted through a liquid crystal display element 28 so as to modulate the polarized light in accordance with display content, and then irradiates the optical reflection screen 31. A scattering layer 34 and the polarizing means 35 are formed on the surface of the screen 31. Almost all of the light made incident from a projection part 22 is reflected and observed through the polarizing means 35, and about 1/2 of the light made incident from the periphery is intercepted by the polarizing means 35. Thus, the high-quality picture in which the contrast of the desired picture displayed on the screen 31 is improved is obtained.
