Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable white (black) display on a black (white) background and to enable color display with decreased unequal colors by constituting a titled element of a 2nd liquid crystal layer which is partitioned from a 1st liquid crystal layer by a light transparent substrate and is sandwiched by substrates and a pair of polarizers. CONSTITUTION:This element is constituted of the 1st liquid crystal layer 16 which is sandwiched by a pair of the substrates 11, 21, is oriented approximately horizontally with the substrates and has the structure twisted at >=120 deg. and <=360 deg. in the thickness direction, the 2nd liquid crystal layer 26 which is partitioned therefrom by a sheet or plural sheets of the light transparent substrates and is sandwiched by the substrates 21, 31 and a pair of the polarizers 17, 27. The angle between the liquid crystal orientation direction on the substrates adjacent to the polarizers and the transmission axes or absorption axes of said polarizers is >=25 deg. and <=65 deg., and the angle between the orientation direction of the liquid crystals of the respective layers on the substrate 21 which partitions the 2nd liquid crystal layer 26 and the 1st liquid crystal layer 16 is >=60 deg. and <=120 deg.. Since the color change by the change in the cell thickness is thereby decreased, the unequal colors are hardly generated and since the cell has the excellent steepness, the cell is usable as the liquid crystal display elements of a large display capacity. In addition, the black and white display of the large capacity by simple matrix driving is possible.
