PURPOSE:To enable a machine tool to be automatically stopped certainly at the time of breakage of a cutting tool by comparing the oscillatory waveform of a tool main body in a normal state with an oscillation obtained by means of a piezoelectric element and propagated from a cutting portion to the tool main body, so that any breakage of the tool may be detected. CONSTITUTION:In a bite main body 10 disposed on a lathe is directly provided a piezoelectric element 14 in advance, so in the case of cutting a work by using this bite, an oscillatory waveform from the piezoelectric element 14 is sent to an arithmetic means 20 simultaneously with start of cutting. Thereat, the oscillatory waveform of the bite main body 10 in the case of a suitable cutting is previously stored into a memory means 21 so that the oscillatory waveform from the piezoelectric element 14 is compared with the stored oscilla tory waveform. And next, in the case that a built-up edge is formed or any breakage or fracture occurs on the tip blade portion 11 of the bite, the oscillato ry waveform of the bite main body 10 is different from that at the time of suitable cutting so that a main motor for rotating the spindle of the lathe is stopped, and further the abnormality of the lathe is displayed by means of an alarm lamp or alarm buzzer.
