PURPOSE:To easily control the coldest part of a lamp with a simple structure by inserting the heat absorbing end of a heat pipe into a block made of a material having high thermal conductivity and also used as a holder for a high-output discharge lamp, and providing a forced air-cooling means on the heat radiating end. CONSTITUTION:The discharge lamp 1 is heated along with the UV radiation, and the temp. of the base is increased. The temp. is detected by a temp. sensor 6, and the heat of the base is transferred to a lamp pressing member 3 and the block 2, absorbed by the heat absorbing end of the heat pipe 4, and spontaneously radiated from the heat radiating end to some extent. However, the amt. of the heat received by the heat pipe 4 is larger than that radiated, hence the temp. around the base is gradually increased, a cooling means 5 is driven by a control means 7 when the temp. exceeds 50 deg.C, and air is sent to the heat radiating end of the heat pipe 4 to promote cooling. When the temp. fell below 50 deg.C, the cooling means 5 is stopped, a series of actions are controlled by a computer, and the coldest point is secured.
