PURPOSE:To prepare a polyester film of superior heat dimension stability both in longitudinal and width directions by carrying out relaxation heat treatment at a specific relaxation rate in the width direction of the polyester film and the relaxation heat treating by a given relaxation rate in the longitudinal direction of the film. CONSTITUTION:Relaxation heat treatment of 1-10% relaxation rate is carried out in the width direction of a film, and then relaxation heat treatment of 0.5-4.0% relaxation rate is carried out in the longitudinal direction of the film by holding both ends of the film with an endless belt, the peripheral speed of which gets slower step by step. The relaxation heat treatment temperature in the longitudinal direction is preferably lower than the heat treatment temperature in the width direction. This is because if the relaxation heat treatment temperature of the longitudinal direction is higher than that of the width direction, the effect of relaxation heat treatment in the width direction is nullified, and a film of good heat dimension stability is hard to prepare. In case the heat treatment temperature in the longitudinal direction is lower than 140 deg.C, the heat dimension stability in the longitudinal direction is difficult to be improved.
