Abstract
PURPOSE:To ensure excellent picture element reproduction properties in any region from low density to high density and record a high-quality image, by providing a foamed layer and an under-coat layer by specified methods between a base and a thermal recording layer. CONSTITUTION:Heat-expandable hollow particulates comprise a low boiling point substance in shells formed of a thermoplastic resin. The particulates are mixed with a water-based binder to prepare a coating liquid, which is applied to a base, followed by drying to provided a foamable layer. The coating weight of the foamable layer is so set that the amount of the hollow particulates on the base is at least 1g/m<2>, preferably, 2-6g/m<2>. An under-coat layer is provided on the foamable layer by a method wherein an aqueous coating liquid containing an inorganic or organic pigment as a main constituent is applied to the foamable layer, in a coating weight, as a pigment, of at least 1g/m<2>, preferably, 2-10g/m<2>. Foaming of the foamable layer by heating is conducted during or after drying the under-coat layer, by bringing a hot plate heated to 70-140 deg.C into close contact with the surface of the under coat layer.
