PURPOSE: To prevent the generation of color leakage or deterioration on the edge part of an image or the head position of a line by finding out plural representative color data preferentially in accordance with the frequency of appearance and executing adaptive mapping processing for providing current color data based upon these representative color data. CONSTITUTION: Each inputted digital primary color data consisting of 8 bits in each color (24 bits per pixel) are compressed to compression data dd consisting of 8 bits per pixel and the data dd are supplied to a color display circuit 31, which restores the data dd to three-primary color data consisting of 8 bits in each color. In the case of compressing color data, a color space is devided into plural areas and representative color data in respective areas are used for processing. In this case, an edge part of which color image signal change is larger than a prescribed threshold is previously found out, the appearance frequency of a pixel corresponding to the edge part in each divided area of the color space is found out and representative color mapping processing is executed by preferentially using color data having higher frequency. Consequently color expression can be finely executed even on the edge part of an image or the line head position of a screen and comprehensive picture quality can sharply be improved.
