Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain excellent durability and liquid retainability by using a nonwoven fabric made of ethylene-vinyl alcohol(EVAL) copolymer fibers having specified fineness and length as a battery separator. CONSTITUTION:A nonwoven fabric made of EVAL copolymer fibers having a fineness of 0.001-0.3denier and a length of 150mm or less is used as battery separator. The molar ratio of ethylene to vinyl alcohol is 25-60:75-40mol%, and the copolymer having this molar ratio is preferable in terms of durability and liquid ratainability. The fineness of fibers less than 0.001denier is not preferable because too much fine fibers make handling in a production process difficult and economical efficiency is not so good, and that thicker than 0.3 denier is not preferable because the separator occupies large volume in a battery. The fiber length of 150mm or less is necessary to form a uniform web. This battery separator provides excellent durability and liquid retainability.
