Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a protective film which has a low coefft. of friction and is strong to impart by providing a carbon film which consists of a diamond-like carbon film as matrix and is dispersed with graphite films on the surface of a magnetic memory medium. CONSTITUTION:The carbon film 4 which consists of the diamond-like carbon film 20 as the matrix (continuous body) and is dispersed with the graphite films 30 is used as the protective film on the surface of the magnetic medium. Such carbon film 4 formed by dispersing the graphite films 3 into the matrix of the diamond-like carbon film 20 is obtd. by forming the diamond-like carbon film 20, then reforming part of the diamond-like carbon film 20 to the graphite films 30 by projection of laser light. The shape and area ratio of the graphite can be changed as desired by the operation of the laser. The protective film which has the low coefft. of friction and is strong to impact is thereby formed while the high hardness and excellent wear resistance of the diamond-like carbon film are maintained.
