Abstract
PURPOSE:To efficiently separate a specific component from a mixture of fatty acids, by using a system of immiscible two solvents of combined specific solvents as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:In extracting a highly unsaturated fatty acid from a mixture of fatty acids containing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (e.g. eicosapentaenoic acid or arachidonic acid), a system of two solvents consisting of a hydrocarbon- based solvent (e.g. n-hexane or n-octane, especially n-heptane) having a structure similar to that of the molecular chain of the fatty acid and a polar solvent (preferably hydrous nitrile having 5-20wt.% water content) which is solvated with carboxyl group of the fatty acids and affinity for unsaturated bond is used as a solvent and the highly unsaturated fatty acids are selectively extracted in a polar solvent phase. The fatty acids are partitioned based on difference in affinity for the polar solvent. Separating ability between the fatty acids are improved and phase separation properties of the solvent are improved by existence of the hydrocarbon-based solvent.
