Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a skirt portion from interference and seizure with a cylinder in an elliptical piston by forming a predetermined width and length recess on the outer peripheral surface of the skirt portion provided with a rib connected to an intermediate boss of a connecting rod connecting boss portion. CONSTITUTION:A piston 1 having an elliptical cross section having a long axis 11 and short axis 13 is slidably fitted in a cylinder having a similar cross section in an internal combustion engine. The piston 1 has on the back of upper surface 19 two outside boss portions 21 respectively located on both sides in the direction of long axis and two intermediate boss portions 23 located on positions intermediate said outside boss portions 21. A piston pin for connecting a connecting rod is fitted in these boss portions 21, 23. The respective intermediate boss portions 23 are connected to the outer peripheral surface 41 sides of a skirt portion 37 of piston 1 in the direction of short axis 13 through reinforcing ribs 25. Then, the skirt portion 37 connected to the ribs 25 on both sides of piston 1 in the direction of short axis 13 is formed on the outer peripheral surface 41 with recesses 43 having width W and length L and spaced from the lower end 37A of skirt portion.
