Abstract
PURPOSE:To contrive application to a highly efficient wear-resistant member, by subjecting a metal (alloy) of group IVb or Vb to heating treatment in a nitrogen air flow and forming a nitrogen-enriched layer on the surface. CONSTITUTION:A metal of group IVb, such as Ti, Zr, and Hf, or of group Vb, such as V, Nb, and Ta, or alloy thereof is heated in a nitrogen air flow, by which a nitrogen-enriched layer is formed on the surface. This nitrogen- enriched layer is used as a wear-resistant layer. This nitrogen-enriched layer has a hardness of about Hv1,000 micro-Vickers hardness. Since this layer has superior adhesive strength with the metal, it can be used under specific severe environments.
