Abstract

PURPOSE:To widen the dimming range without generating a break division of lamp current and enhance the light emitting efficiency in full light condition by controlling the input voltage of an inverter circuit so that the oscillating frequency varies from partially smoothed division of rippled current, which is obtained by rectifying the commercial AC voltage, to other divisions. CONSTITUTION:The oscillating frequencies fa, fb of the A and B divisions in each cycle of partially smoothed DC voltage waveform shall be related as fa>fb by a changeover switch 28, wherein the oscillating frequencies are decided by the resonance condition of a transistor inverter 2. The input voltage waveform of the inverter 2 varies with operation of a dimmer 50 and with light reduction of the voltage waveform of commercial AC mains 16, to cause of the A division and decrease of B division, and the lamp current decreases by and by to reduce the discharge lamp 3. A choke coil 4 will have a high impedance according to frequency, which together with voltage sinking action, reduces the lamp current in the A division, but the setting is such that maintenance of discharging is practicable, so that no break division of lamp current is generated.
