Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the surface of a glass body from being deteriorated and to improve chemical durability of the glass body by ion-exchanging monovalent cations of the surface of the glass body incorporating monovalent cations with bivalent cations and reducing the concn. of the monovalent cations. CONSTITUTION:A glass body incorporating monovalent cations is obtained by immersing e.g. a phosphate glass body incorporating 40mol.% Na2O and 32mol.% P2O5 in melted salt consisting of 40wt.% AgNO3 and 60wt.% KNO3 e.g. at 430 deg.C for 350hr. Then this glass body is immersed in melted salt incorporating bivalent cations consisting of e.g. 17wt.% Ba(NO3)2 and 83wt.% CsNO3 in a prescribed time and the monovalent cations existing within 20mum thickness of the surface are ion-exchanged with the bivalent cations and the concn. of the monovalent cations of the surface is reduced. Thereby the chemical durability of a functional glass body such as a refractive index distribution-type glass body is improved.
