Abstract

PURPOSE:To form the title SiC sintered body having high toughness, oxidation resistance at high temp., and excellent strength by consisting the mixture essentially of SiC and contg. Mo or an Mo compd., B or a B compd., and C or a C compd. CONSTITUTION:The mixture consisting essentially of SiC and contg. 0.1-30wt.% of >=1 kind between Mo and an Mo compd., expressed in terms of Mo, 0.1-5wt.% of >=1 kind between B and a B compd., expressed in terms of B, and 0.1-5wt.% of >=1 kind between C and the C compd. forming C at high temp., expressed in terms of remaining C, is prepared. The mixture is then sintered in the atmosphere inert to the above-mentioned components or in a vacuum. Sintering is preferably performed at the maximum temp. of 1,900-2,300 deg.C. Although the sintering can be carried out under atmospheric pressure, sintering is preferably carried out under pressure to obtain a denser sintered body. Molybdenum silicide, molybdenum carbide, molybdenum boride, etc., can be exemplified as the Mo compd.
