Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a low hydrogen overvoltage cathode at a good product yield by coating the fine particles of metals at a specific thickness onto the surface of the cathode base body by a reduced pressure thermal spraying method at the time of producing the cathode to be used in an electrolytic cell for an aq. soln. of alkali metal halide, etc. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the electrode base body made of iron and steel, stainless steel, Ni, Ni alloy, Cu, or Cu alloy in the shape of a perforated plate, expanded metal, net or the like is roughened and cleaned by sandblasting as the low hydrogen overvoltage cathode to be used at the time of generating gaseous H2 by electrolyzing the aq. soln. of the alkali metal halide such as NaCl or the aq. soln. of the alkali metal hydroxide such as NaOH by a diaphragm method or ion exchange membrane method. For example, the Ni or Ni alloy is thermally sprayed under the reduced pressure in the form of 1-200mum fine particles to 10-300mum thickness on the above- mentioned base body in a hermetically closed treatment chamber by an arc thermal spraying method, plasma thermal spraying method, etc., while the inside of the chamber is evacuated to a reduced pressure. The oxidation of the metal to be thermally sprayed during the thermal spraying is prevented and the cathode which is lower in the hydrogen overvoltage than heretofore and has the excellent strength and life is obtd.
