Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain high purity quat. ammonium hydroxide over a long period when an aq. soln. of a salt as starting material is fed to a starting material chamber partitioned off by anion and cation exchange membranes and electrolysis is carried out, by using a specified anion exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:A cathode chamber, a starting material chamber and an anode chamber are formed by stretching cation and anion exchange membranes on the cathode and anode sides of an electrolytic cell, respectively. A membrane having a layer whose fixed ion concn. is >=8 molarity and an oxidation resistant surface layer on the cathode side is used as the anion exchange membrane. An aq. soln. of a quat. ammonium salt is fed to the starting material chamber and quat. ammonium hydroxide is taken out of the cathode chamber.
