Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption of the navigation device by supplying electric power to a storage device for digitized map data only when the map data are read out, and stopping the power supply in other cases. CONSTITUTION:A CPU 6 gathers map data within a constant range including the current position from a storage device 10 with the outputs of an azimuth sensor 1, a distance sensor 2, and a GPS device 3 in traveling and displays them on a display device 12. In this constitution, the device 10 is connected to a power source through a relay 11 which is operated by a driving circuit 9. The CPU 6 turns on the relay 11 to supply electric power to the device 10 and inputs necessary data in the RAM 8 unless the map data within the constant range including the position are in the RAM 18. When the inputting operation is completed, the relay 11 is turned off. Thus, the device 10 is turned on only when necessary to reduce the power consumption of the whole navigation device.
