Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of a column by melting a low melting point jointing metal between a glass tube and steel tube on the outside, thereby joining the tubes. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of the glass tube 1 having about 4mm bore are sealed and the tube is immersed in a chemical plating liquid 2 to form the metal film of chemical plating on the outside wall of the glass tube 1. The joining metal 3 is then thinly welded by heating on the outside wall of the glass tube 1. The bar- or plate-shaped joining metal 4 is wound around this tube 1 and the tube 1 is inserted into the steel tube 5. While the tube 1 and the tube 5 are held erected perpendicularly, asbestos 6 is packed into the spacing in the lower part of the tubes 1, 5. The tube 1 and the tube 5 are then put into a heating furnace and are kept at the temp. above the m.p. of the metal 4 and below the softening point of the glass tube 1. The glass tube 1 and the tube 5 are joined by melting the metal 4. The tubes are thereafter cooled to decrease the strain of the tube 1. The efficiency of the column is thus improved.
