Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the title polymer having a low refractive index and being useful, for example, as sheath material for optical fibers, which polymer comprises specific repeating units and other repeating units having a photopolymerizable functional group. CONSTITUTION:A fluorinated styrene derivative of formula I [wherein R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is H or lower polyfluoroalkyl; R<3> is (ether linkage- containing) polyfluoroalkyl; X is -O- or a group of formula II; R<4-5> are each lower alkyl; Y<1-5> are each H or halogen; and m and n are each 0 or 1] is copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a photopolymerizable functional group of formula III (wherein A is -O-, -CH2-, a group of formula IV, etc.; B is -OCH3-, a group of formula V, etc.; R<6> is H or lower alkyl; Z is a photopolymerizable functional group; l is 0-3; and k is 0 or 1) to produce a photo-crosslinkable fluorinated styrene polymer that comprises repeating units of formula VI and 1-20mol.% photopolymerizable repeating units of formula VII (wherein R<7> is R<6>) and has a weight-average mol.wt. of 1,000-20,000, a melting point of 80 deg.C or below and a refractive index of 1.45 or below.
