CONSTITUTION:In the production of a polyarylene sulfide by bringing a dihaloaromatic compound into contact with a metal sulfide in a polar solvent, the following process is used. Namely, a metal sulfide which is at least one member selected from among alkali metal sulfides and alkaline earth metal sulfides and having a water to sulfide molar ratio <=1.2 is pretreated with hydrogen sulfide and a small amount of water at 45-230 deg.C, and the pretreated metal sulfide is reacted with said dihaloaromatic compound.
