Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled powder useful as electronic materials readily, by blending a Zr salt solution with fine powder of TiO2 and Nb2O5 having a given atomic ratio of metal to Zr, treating the blend with an alkali solution to give sediment and calcinating. CONSTITUTION:A Zr salt solution of a Zr compound such as Zr hydroxide, oxychloride, carbonate or sulfate is blended with monodisperse fine powder of TiO2 or Nb2O5 which has an atomic ratio of metal to Zr of 0.1-0.3 and <=0.1mu particle diameter to give a blend. Then the blend is dissolved in ammonia water which contains neither Na nor K and is readily decomposed at a calcination state to form sediment. Then the prepared sediment is washed, dried and calcinated to form modified zirconia powder. Optionally the powder is ground by a ball mill to give modified zirconia powder having excellent powder characteristics.
