Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent penetration of rubbish and dust into a reaction vessel and obtain an optical fiber preform having low loss, by maintaining the inner reaction vessel to more negative pressure than the circumference as well as maintaining the circumference to clean atmosphere and subjecting a glass raw material to flame hydrolysis or thermal oxidation. CONSTITUTION:A vessel 3 for isolating open air is provided around a reaction vessel 1 for obtaining a porous glass preform 2 and the first burner 4 for producing core glass fine powder is provided in the vessel 1. Moreover, the second burner 7 for producing glass fine powder capable of forming cladding is provided in the vessel 1. The preformer 2 is supported by a quartz glass rod 13. In above- mentioned constitution, the pressure is controlled so as to P1<P2<P3, when pressure in vessel 1, pressure in vessel 3 and pressure of open air are kept to P1, P2 and P3 respectively by feeding clean air through a filter 17 into the vessel 3. By the above-mentioned method, clean air is charged into the vessel so as to enable to isolate open air and high-quality porous preform can be obtained.
