Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals in good conversion ate and optical yield, by asymmetrically reducing an olefin derivative with hydrogen in the presence of a metallic catalyst modified with an optically active binaphthyl derivative. CONSTITUTION:An olefin derivative expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl) is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a metallic catalyst modified with an optically active binaphthyl derivative expressed by formula II (R is lower alkylphenyl, lower alkoxyphenyl or 3-8C cycloalkyl) in a solvent, such as methanol, preferably at 50-100 deg.C under 30-150kg/cm<2> hydrogen pressure to afford the aimed substance expressed by formula III. A transition metal, such as Rh or Ru, is used as a metallic component in the catalyst and the metallic catalyst obtained by a well-known method is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-1mol.% based on the compound expressed by formula I.
