| [The present invention relates to a mattress.

The object of the present invention is to present; he ter a mattress of a very particular type, which allows j; support all parts of the body extended on this mattress in such a way as to avoid any deformation and harmful tension i j in the body, in particular in the spine.

A particular aim of the present invention is to provide a mattress with therapeutic properties, that is to say a mattress which makes it possible to support, // i - Δ - in a predetermined and medically justified manner, certain parts of the deflected bodies to bring them back to a normal state.

To this end, according to the invention, the mattress comprises, incorporated in a substantially elastic material, means making it possible to adjust the flexibility and the local elasticity of the mattress as a function of the distribution by weight of the human body lying on the latter.

Advantageously, the aforementioned means comprise substantially rigid elements distributed inside the mattress.

Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description given below, by way of nonlimiting examples, of some particular embodiments of the mattress according to the invention with reference to the attached drawings.

FIG. 1 represents a graph showing the variation in the penetration of the different parts of a body lying on a mattress of uniform elasticity depending on the length of the body.

Figure 1 clearly shows the variations in local compressions created by a body stretched out on a mattress for which the elasticity is the same in all places.

In addition, for people with already lesions or deformities, mainly from the spine, the mattress can be made in such a way that the affected parts of the body and the area extending around them are supported. in a determined, medically justified and controlled manner, so as to bring this part of the body back into a normal position without causing bed sores.

FIGS. 2 to 10 show different embodiments of the mattress according to the invention which fear and achieve this goal.

Figures 2 to 4 show a mattress for two people made for example of polyurethane foam. This mattress has a series of slots 1 delimiting these portions of foam or para-spastic form 2, the lower faces of which are integral with a layer of this continuous base 3.

The relative distribution and dimension of these elements takes place according to the distribution of the weight of the human body lying on the mattress.

These para llélépidiques portions 4 extend transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction of the mattress one beside the other, the whole of these portions being surrounded by a lateral rim 5 also forming an integral part with the base layer 3 and extending at the same level as the upper face of this portion, so that these upper faces of the mattress are entirely flat.

Thanks to the presence of the slots 1, the elasticity and flexibility of a given portion 2 has practically no influence on the elasticity and flexibility of the neighboring portions. This therefore allows fairly rigorous local control of the flexibility and elasticity of the mattress according to the invention.

FIGS. 7 to 10 relate to mattresses having portions 2 of different shape and dimensions separated by slots 1.

In the simplest embodiment, which however has not been shown in the figures, it is possible to provide substantially rigid elements incorporated in the elastic dobby of the mattress without providing these slots between those consecutive elements.

FIG. 5 shows another form of this embodiment 1 again in which the base layer 3 is completed by a rigid support 6, allowing perspiration to pass through, and which, for this reason, can for example present these per- -

If this support is sufficiently solid, it can in fact replace the conventional box spring.

Figure 6 relates to an embodiment of a mattress in which the portions 2 are independent of each other and are housed in an envelope which could possibly constitute the cover 7 even of the mattress. This cover is preferably compartmentalized by transverse partitions 9, so as to keep the foam portions in place in their relative position.

Since in such a mattress a continuous base layer has not been provided, its thickness is relatively reduced, so that it could possibly be rolled up.

The mattress according to this embodiment can advantageously be placed on a conventional mattress or on an armchair, a camp bed, etc.

As follows from the above, the mattress according to the present invention differs significantly from the combination of a bed base produced from these flexible boards and a conventional mattress placed on this bed base.
