Abstract

Pig iron is dephosphorised using an agent based on a potassium cpd., esp. potash, possibly also contg. a calcium cpd. (opt. mixed with iron oxide) and a flux (pref. a fluoride such as CaF2 or NaF). The process is used esp. for dephosphorising pig iron in a torpedo ladle. The resulting phosphate and potassium-contg. slag is useful in prodn. of fertiliser and has a very strong neutralising action.

Procédé de déphosphoration de fonte liquide.Liquid iron dephosphorization process.

The present invention relates to a process for dephosphorizing cast iron, applicable in particular in a container such as a torpedo bag.

Numerous processes are already known for dephosphorizing liquid iron, both in the ladle and in the refining converter.

Most of the methods known to date consist in using industrial soda, namely sodium carbonate to ensure this dephosphoration.

These known methods give satisfactory results from a purely technical point of view, but they have a significant economic disadvantage.

Indeed, the cost price of soda is high and it should be treated to recover and recycle it, which i involves additional costs.

The subject of the present invention is a method which makes it possible to retire | mediate this inconvenience.

For this purpose, the process which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that a | dephosphorizing agent consisting mainly of at least one substance derived from potassium.

Among the substances which can be used, mention may in particular be made of! preferably, carbonate K2CC> 3, oxide K20 and chloride KCl; this list is however not exhaustive and it would not depart from the scope of the invention to use one or more other potassium derivatives, alone or as a mixture.

I According to an advantageous implementation method, a dephosphorizing agent is used which also contains at least one lime-based substance, for example lime itself, lime ferrite or a mixture of lime and iron oxide.

It can therefore find a very interesting outlet in the manufacture of fertilizers. Its interest in this use is further increased by the fact that it has a very strong neutralizing action.

When considering the use of slag for the manufacture of fertilizers, it is however advisable to limit the quantity of oxidizing gas blown, so as not to cause the oxidation of manganese. This would indeed pass into the slag in the form of oxide MnO ^ # which would deplete the metal bath by man- 'Γ “.......
