Description
Description
COVER FOR GAS CYLINDER TAP WITH A PROTECTIVE HANDLE
Technical field [0001] The invention concerns the field of taps for gas cylinder and of covers for such taps. More specifically the invention is directed to a cover for a tap of a gas cylinder as well as to a tap assembly comprising a tap and a cover.
Background art [0002] Prior art patent document published WO 2015/132092 A2 discloses a cover for a gas cylinder tap. The cover comprises a shell for housing the tap and a hook pivotally mounted on the shell, the hook being configured for securing the gas cylinder to a horizontal bar, like a bar of a hospital bed. The shell comprises reservations on its external surface configured for receiving the hook in a folded position so as to generally conform to said external surface. The invention is also directed to a gas storage assembly comprising a gas cylinder, a tap and a cover. The shell comprises an upper half shell and a lower half shell joined together. The tap comprises a rotatable hand-wheel for actuating a flow selector, said hand-wheel being on the upper half shell. The outer spherical surface of the cover is formed on the shell and on the hand-wheel, which means that the hand-wheel wheel might be mishandled due to its position. In such a case, the outer signs written on the outer surface might be deleted from the hand-wheel, which can ultimately be broken. Such an eventuality raises safety concerns.

[0028] The features concerning the hand-wheel may also be applied to the user interface.
Advantages of the invention [0029] The invention is particularly interesting in that it provides a protection to the hand-wheel. It defines a protected space around the exposed area of the outer surface in order to keep away damaging objects. First, the protective wings built a shielding on each side of the hand-wheel. Second, the protective wings define with their edges a safe volume. Therein, the contact of the hand-wheel with a floor or with a horizontal rod is prevented.
[0030] The protective wings extend over the whole height of the upper half shell, and optionally of the cover. Then, it provides protections to others parts of the tap assembly. Since the protective wings are solids body, they increase the stiffness of the shell. Their arrangement improves the impact resistance, even if a gas storage assembly with a full gas cylinder falls on the ground from a hospital bed.
Brief description of the drawings [0031] Figure 1 is a front view of the tap assembly in accordance with the invention.
[0032] Figure 2 illustrates a side view of the tap assembly of figure 1.
[0033] Figure 3 represents a top view of the tap assembly of figures 1 and 2.
Description of an embodiment [0034] In the following description, the vertical axis corresponds to the stacking direction of the tap on the gas cylinder, and/or to the axis of the gas cylinder. The longitudinal axis extends from the front face to the rear face and is horizontal. The transverse axis is perpendicular to both previous axes.
[0035] Figure 1 shows a front view of the tap assembly 2 where the cover 4 houses the tap 6 for a gas cylinder (not represented). This figure shows a front view of the assembly 2. The tap assembly 2 may form a gas storage assembly in combination with a gas cylinder. In such a combination, the cover 4 is separated from the gas cylinder. The cover is essentially rigidly fixed to the tap, and remains free of contact with the gas cylinder. The tap 6 may reduce the gas pressure and/or the gas flow. The tap 6 includes a lower connection portion 8 intended to be in fluid communication with the gas cylinder which may contain high pressure gas, for instance with a pressure of at least 100 bars, preferably of at least 200 bars. The gas may be argon or oxygen.
[0036] The tap 6 may also comprise a front pipe 10 providing gas from the gas cylinder. This pipe 10 may be arranged in a pocket 12 formed in the cover 4. The cover 4 is fixedly attached to the tap and is intended to safeguard and protect a valve unit of the tap. The cover 4 comprises a shell 14 with an outer surface which is generally spherical. The shell 14 may be a main shell, it may comprise an outer wall forming the outer surface. Said wall may be of constant thickness.
[0037] The tap 6 includes a hand-wheel 16. The rotatable hand-wheel 16 may actuate a flow selector and/or a pressure reducer of the tap 6. The hand-wheel 16 is arranged in the front face of the shell 14, and on the top of it. It forms a user interface. The user interface may comprise any other component replacing the hand-wheel. It may comprise an actuating device, and/or a control interface, and/or a display unit. The hand-wheel 16 may be placed in the upper half of the shell 14. The hand-wheel 16 may form the summit of the shell 14. It may comprise a disk with an annular array of ridges. By the way, the outer surface of the cover is also formed on the hand-wheel 16. The hand-wheel 16 occupies the majority of the width of the front face of the shell 14.
[0038] In order to prevent damage when the tap assembly is tampered, the cover 4 comprises protective wings 18 on each side. The protective wings 18 are laterally disposed with respect to the hand-wheel 16, and slightly laterally spaced from said hand-wheel 16. The protective wings 18 extend over the whole height of the area where the disk stands. They may be flat, and include lower junctions which are curved in order to accommodate the spherical shape of the shell 14. The protective wings 18 form projections above the user interface. They from ridges, which are on top of the area to protect.
[0039] The cover 6 may comprise an upper handle 20. It includes a horizontal bar joining the protective wings 18. The protective wings 18 and the upper handle 20 form the shape of the inverted letter “U”. A through hole 22 is surrounded by the shell 14, the protective wings 18 and the upper handle 20. The latter may include a battery providing electric power to the tap 6. The through hole 22 may be included in a protected space 22 between the protective wings 18. Inside said protected space 22, the hand-wheel is preserved, at least by the protective wings 18. The upper handle 20 may contribute to the protective effect.
[0040] Figure 2 represents a side view of the tap assembly 2. The vertical axis 24 and the longitudinal axis 26 are drawn. The cover 4 may comprise two lateral flats 28 and a rear flat 30 formed in the spherical shape, or ball shape, of the shell 14. The rear flat 30 may be a main flat surface 30. It may be used in combination with a pivoting hook (not represented) for hanging and blocking the gas storage assembly to a horizontal bar of a bed. The pivoting hook may be linked to the rear of the cover 4.
[0041] The shell 14 may comprise an upper half shell 32 and a lower half shell 34. They are joined at a joining interface 36. The joining interface 36 may be a curved surface, or a plane. It may generally be inclined with respect to the vertical axis 24. The joining interface 36 and the vertical axis 24 may form an angle β comprised between 30° and 60°, preferably between 40° and 50 . The center of the sphere may level the joining interface 36.
[0042] The upper half shell 32 and the lower half shell 34 may comprise polymer. They may be manufactured of composite material, with an organic matrix and fibres for instance. Some additives may be used in the matrix. The upper half shell 32 and the lower half shell 34 may both be moulded parts. The upper half shell 32, the protective wings 18, and eventually the upper handle 20 may be moulded together.
[0043] The protective wings 18 extend vertically from the upper half shell 32. Their intersection may be arcuate. The lower half shell 34 may remain away from said protective wings 18. The protective wings 18 are joined to the upper half shell 32 over the majority of its length, which increase its stiffness. Then the tap is more protected. The stiffness of each of the protective wings 18 is also improved. Both of them may comprise an inner elongated body, or a solid portion, inside the corresponding protective wing 18, whose transverse section is at least 30 mm2, preferably at least 80 mm2. Theses solid portions may extend along the majority of the leading edges 38 of the protective wings 18, and form said leading edges 38. Both leading edges form the front lip of the protective wings 18. Each leading edge 38 may comprise a straight portion 40 between the upper handle and a front curved portion 42, as a circular sector 42. The straight portions 40 may be parallel to the hand-wheel. The protective wings 18 may be hollow. Both of them may comprise an inner cavity reducing the weight of the cover. This can also enhance a damping effect.
[0044] In this lateral view, the hand-wheel his hidden by one of the protective wings 18. This configuration protects the hand-wheel from a front shock, by way of example when the gas storage assembly falls on the ground. Such an event could severely damage the hand-wheel due to the weight of a full gas cylinder used in the medical sector. Since the protective wings 18 may be parallel, they may also protect the hand-wheel against a transversal bar colliding the tap assembly. As a matter of fact, the leading edges 38 of the protective wings 18 are the front lines of the cover, and they are far ahead of the hand-wheel.
[0045] Figure 3 shows a top view of the tap assembly 2 of figures 1 and 2. The transversal axis 44 is drawn for convenience.
[0046] The protective wings 18 form a protective box around the hand-wheel 16. The hand-wheel 16 is recessed behind the leading edges, in peculiar behind the curved portion 42. The latter comprise front tips 46 more ahead than the hand-wheel 16. This geometry improves the protection. A virtual ruled surface may be defined. Said ruled surface may be defined by sliding vertically a transversal bar along the leading edges 38.
[0047] The top view also illustrates the protection provided by the leading edges 38 when a bar, parallel to the transversal axis 44, hits the tap assembly 2. As it is apparent from this view, the bar would contact the protective wings 18, and would be kept away from the hand-wheel 16. The protected space 22 is ahead the protective wings 18 and grants a marge space. The outer surface of the protective wings 18 is enclosed in the protected space 22. It is totally housed therein, preferably with a front margin. The deeper the protected space 22 is, the safer the cover is. This also adds protection in response to curved or uneven hitting objects.
