Head and shoulder protection device against inclement weather

This invention relates to a device for protecting the head and the base of the shoulders against inclement weather, this device being designed to be worn in principle outside of dwellings, in other words in the open air.

5 The usual protective umbrella has some disadvantages, especially if used in strong winds, in which case it does not constitute a perfect protective device because the wind can pass around or under it, possibly letting in rain or moisture and disturbing the hairstyle of the person using it.

10 It often happens that a woman protects her hairstyle by using a scarf as a head covering. But this also has the disadvantage of disturbing the hair. In addition, visibility is poor when using an umbrella because, depending on the position in which it is held, the umbrella obstructs vision, not to mention that its use also poses a risk to other people who are 15 in the vicinity.

One aim of the invention is to create a device that provides adequate protection for the head, hair, and the tops of the shoulders of the person using it without diminishing their field of vision.

Another aim of the invention is to create such a device capable of being folded and carried in a handbag and occupying only a small space both when in use and when at rest and moreover able to be deployed or on the contrary stored easily and quickly.

The protective device as provided for in the invention includes a transparent part to receive and protect a person's head and designed so as to be able to be folded when not needed, this part forming a head cover being provided with a handle to support it and designed so as to keep it in the open position during use.

This device is preferably equipped with a support clip allowing it to be carried after folding.

Eationnellementf several reinforcing elements are provided in order to constitute a rigid framework of the part in question when it is in the open position, these elements being designed so that they can be folded down to allow for storage.

An interesting embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the attached schematic drawing in which: -

As shown in the drawing, this protective device comprises a part 4 forming a head covering with a component 5 forming an easily handled handle. This part 4 can have any desired configuration, either generally rectangular or (as shown) box-like. This part 4 is made of a suitable transparent, water-repellent or waterproof material capable of withstanding the elements, such as a synthetic plastic.

The material constituting part 4 must have sufficient rigidity to maintain its general box-like configuration (as shown in Fig. 1) during the use of this device, but at the same time be flexible enough to be able to fold to take the

position shown in fig. 3. The folds can be dotted or otherwise weakened to facilitate folding.* As indicated, part 4

comprises a rectangular top wall 6 substantially flat and four side walls 8, 10, 12 and 14 extending from top to bottom from this top wall.

One side, in particular side 10, may be slightly shorter than the other sides, thus creating a notch or groove 16 for a purpose which is indicated below. All sides 8, 10, 12, and 14 of part 4 may, however, be of the same length. The upper wall 6 may be pleated or suitably dotted or notched along two intersecting diagonal lines 18 and 20 (Fig. 1) and along a nearly straight line 22 extending between sides 10 and 14 and, in principle, centrally located between sides 8 and 12, in order to facilitate the folding or collapse of the device.

The outer edges of part 4 form a frame-like structure designated as a whole by 24. These edges can be reinforced or stiffened in any suitable way so that this part retains its shape in the deployed position ready for use as shown in the figs. 1 and 4. As shown in the drawing, the frame-like structure 24 may include four reinforcing ribs or edges: spaced longitudinally extending and designated by 26, one of these ribs 26 being disposed at each junction between the adjacent sides of part 4. A reinforcing rib or edge 28 may be provided at the junction between side 8 and the upper element 6 and extend between the ribs 26 at the respective junctions between sides 8 and 10 and 8 and 14. A similar rib 30 extending transversely is provided at the junction between the upper wall 6 and side 12 of part 4; It preferably extends between the ribs 26 arranged at the respective junctions between sides 10 and 12 and 12 and 14. It is preferable that the ribs 28 and 30 be broken or bent or provided with a flexible part in their center as shown in 32 in Fig. 1, in order to facilitate the folding or collapsing of the body 4 of the device.

A rib or reinforcing or stiffening member 34 is provided at the junction between the upper wall 6 and the side wall 10; this member preferably extends between the ribs 26 at the respective junctions between the walls 10 and 12. A similar rib 26 is provided at the junction between the upper wall 6 and the side wall 14; it extends between the ribs 26 fixed at the respective junctions between the walls 8 and 14 and 14 and 12. The ribs 34 and 36 are preferably broken or bent or made flexible in their center as shown

to facilitate the folding of part 4. In addition, ribs or reinforcing elements (not shown) may be provided along the lower edges, sides 8, 10, 12 and 14.

The handle 5 can have any suitable shape; it is preferably provided with a gripping or holding element 40. This handle 5 can be formed by one of the extensions of one of the ribs 26, or can include a folding joint or a telescopic portion (not shown), or be removably attached to the part 4 in any way to facilitate its release or folding in order to bring the device into a folded or portable position. In addition, a suitable clip element 42 can be provided so as to serve for securing the device in the folded position, as shown in Figure 3, and can also constitute a means of carrying the device after it has been folded. This element 42 can be arranged in any suitable manner and occupy any desired location. In addition, sides 8, 10, 12 and 14 and the upper wall 6 can be joined by fastening using sliding staple closures or similar. Openings may be provided in either side of part 4 to allow air circulation.

When the device is to be used, part 4 can be quickly and easily opened to occupy the position shown in Figures 1 and 4, and then the head 44 of the person using the device can be placed in its open lower opening. The notch 16 is preferably positioned in front (during use) of the device and provides clearance for the shoulders 46 of the person using it while facilitating air circulation. Part 4 is supported by the handle 5 in such a way that the person's head 44 is positioned between the sides and below the upper wall 6. The lower opening of part 4, forming a head covering while allowing air circulation inside, prevents any penetration of wind, rain, or moisture-laden particles. The head and hair are protected from the elements without compromising the user's vision.

When the device is not in use, two of the sides, specifically sides 10 and 14, can be manually folded inwards, generally along the center line, and the upper wall 6 can simultaneously be lowered so that the point of intersection of lines 18f, 20, and 22 is folded inwards, as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite sides 8 and 12 can then be brought together to give the whole a generally flat and roughly rectangular shape. As an alternative, the handle 5 can be fitted with a hinge or joint (not shown) so that this handle can be folded or folded inside the casing or close to its 15 external surface in the folded position of the device or even telescopically fitted. The details of implementation may be modified, without departing from the convention, in the area of equivalences.
