Abstract

La presente invención se relaciona con un proceso para la preparación de una sal metálica farmacéuticamente aceptable del ácido clavulánico que comprende las etapas de (a) fermentar con un microorganismo capaz de producir y excretar el ácido clavulánico en el caldo; (b) remover la biomasa y otro material sólido del caldo de fermentación que contiene el ácido clavulánico obtenido en la etapa (a); (c) acidificar la solución obtenida después de la etapa (b) a un pH entre 1 y 3 y extraer la solución acidificada con un solvente parcial o totalmente inmiscible con agua y separar el extracto que contiene el ácido clavulánico; (d) mezclar el extracto que contiene el ácido clavulánico obtenido en la etapa (c) con un donador de metal y al menos un cosolvente adicional para producir una sal metálica de clavulanato preferiblemente cristalina, insoluble, con un rendimiento de al menos 80%; y (e) separar la sal metálica de clavulanato, preferiblemente cristalina, insoluble de la mezcla obtenida en la etapa (d).
