Abstract

A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A FATTY ACID FROM A LOWER ALCOHOL ESTER THEREOF BY HYDROLYZING THE ESTER IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ACID CATALYST, WHILE ADDING WATER CONTINOUSLY FROM OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM AND CONTINOUSLY DISTILLING THE RESULTING LOWER ALCOHOL AND UNREACTED WATER OUT OF THE SYSTEM SO THAT WATER DOES NOT SEPARATE FROM THE REACTION MIXTURE OF FORM A DISTINCT AQUEOUS PHASE.
