Abstract
RARE EARTH METALS AND THEIR ALLOYS ARE PREPARED BY ELECTROLYSIS OF A MOLTEN SALT BATH COMPRISING AT LEAST ONE CHLORIDE OF A RARE EARTH, AT LEAST ONE ALKALI METAL OR ALKALINE-EARTH METAL CHLORIDE AND AT LEAST ONE ALKALI METAL OR ALKALINE-EARTH METAL FLUORIDE. APPARATUS FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION COMPRISES A TANK 2 EXTENDED VERTICALLY BY A DRAIN CONDUIT 3 OF SMALLER CROSS-SECTION THAN THE TANK.
