Abstract
A NEW CATALYST, RUTHENIUM- TIN SUPPORTED ON ALUMINA OR SILICA IS FOUND TO SELECTIVELY HYDROGENATE OLEIC ACID TO 9- OCTADECENE -1-01 AT LOW PRESSURE WITH HIGH YIELD. OUR STUDIES ALSO REVEAL THAT THE CATALYST PREPARED BY THE SOL- GEL METHOD SHOWED HIGHER ACTIVITY AND SELECTIVITY THAN THOSE PREPARED BY THE CONVENTIONAL IMPREGNATION AND COPRECIPITATION METHODS. IN THIS NEW METHOD THE RUTHENIUM AND TIN METALS ARE BETTER DISPERSED ON THE SUPPORT (ALUMINA OR SILICA) WHICH IS ALSO GENERATED FROM THEIR PRECURSORS DURING THE CATALYST PREPARATION PROCESS. THE PRESENCE OF TIN IMPARTS SELECTIVITY TO THE CATALYST. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CATALYST DEPENDS ON THE RAW MATERIALS, ACTIVATION AS WELL AS REACTION CONDITIONS. UNDER OPTIMAL CONDITION OF 250?C AND 56KG/CM2 A CONVERSION (OF OLEIC ACID TO 9- OCTADECENE-1-01) OF 70- 83AND SELECTIVITY EXCEEDING 80AN BE ACHIEVED.
