Abstract

THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO A PROCESS FOR MODIFYING A POLYETHELENE IN AN EXTRUDER. THE POLYETHYLENE IS BROUGHT INTO CONTACT WITH OXYGEN OR A GAS MIXTURE CONTAINING OXYGEN IN THE EXTRUDER, OPTIONALLY IN THE PRESENCE OF A RELATIVELY SMALL QUANTITY OR PREFERABLY IN THE ABSENCE OF SHORT-TERM ANTIOXIDANT AGENT. THE POLYETHYLENE THUS BROUGHT INTO CONTACT IS TREATED THERMOMECHANICALLY IN THE MOLTEN STATE IN THE EXTRUDER SUPPLYING A RELATIVELY HIGH SPECIFIC MECHANICAL ENERGY, THE TREATMENT BEING CONDUCTED TO ITS TERM WHEN THE VALUE OF THE LOSS TANGENT OF THE POLYETHYLENE CHARACTERIZING ITS VISCOELASTIC STATE DECREASES WITH A DESIRED PROPORTION. THE POLYMER THUS TREATED IS PARTICULARLY SUITABLE FOR BEING TRANSFORMED INTO FILM BY BLOWN EXTRUSION WITH A CONSIDERABLY INCREASED BUBBLE STABILITY.
