A COMPOSITION FOR ATTRACTING ORYCTES RHINOCEROS COMPRISES ETHYL 4-METHYLOCTANOATE, ETHYL 4-METHYLHEPTANOATE OR 4-METHYLOCTANOIC ACID. ORYCTES RHINOCEROS WERE CAPTURED IN TRAPS BAITED WITH AN -INVENTION COMPRISING ETHYL 4-METHYLOCTANOATE OR WITH ETHYL 4-METHYLOCTANOATE AND ROTTING PALM TISSUE. ORYCTES RHINOCEROS WERE CAPTURED AT SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER LEVELS IN TRAPS BAITED WITH AN -COMPRISING ETHYL 4-METHYLOCTANOATE THAN TO TRAPS BAITED WITH AN -COMPRISING ETHYL 4-MELHYLHEPANOATE, 4-METHYLOCTANOIC ACID, OR THE PREVIOUSLY KNOWN ATTRACTANT, ETHYL CRYSANTHEMATE. RACEMIC AND (S)-ETHYL 4-METHYLOCTANOATE ATTRACTED ORYCTES RHINOCEROS AT STATISTICALLY EQUAL LEVELS, WHILE (R)-ETHYL4-METHYLOCTANOATE WAS NOT ATTRACTIVE.
