IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A HEAT EXCHANGER CAPABLE OF PERFORMING HEAT EXCHANGE EFFICIENTLY AND CAPABLE OF USING A VARIETY OF REFRIGERANTS, THE HEAT EXCHANGER OF THE PRESENT INVENTION COMPRISES A CYLINDER WHEREIN IN HEAT SOURCE FLUID ENTERS ONE OPENING END THEREOF AND FLOWS OUT OF THE OTHER OPENING END THEREOF, AND ONE OR MORE PIPES WHICH ARE WOUND AROUND THE OUTER SURFACE OF THE CYLINDER IN A SPIRAL MANNER APPROXIMATELY ALONG A LINE SUBSTANTIALLY ORTHOGONAL TO THE GENERATING LINE OF THE OUTER SURFACE OF THE CYLINDER.
