OPTICAL ELEMENTS AND OTHER ITEMS ARE CLEANED WITH THE USE OF A CLEANING AGENT CONSISTING ESSENTIALLY OF AT LEAST ONE SATURATED HYDROCARBON HAVING 8 TO 12 CARBON ATOMS WHOSE 95% RUNNING POINT FALLS WITHIN 5°C OF ITS INITIAL BOILING POINT AND WHOSE 99% RUNNING POINTS FALLS WITHIN 10°C OF ITS INITIAL BOILING POINT IN DISTILLATION AT 760 MMHG OR WITH THE USE OF A CLEANING AGENT COMPOSITION FOR HAND WIPING COMPRISING 66 TO 90% BY WEIGHT OF AT LEAST ONE ALIPHATIC HYDROCARBON WITH 6 CARBON ATOMS CONTAINING AT LEAST 44% BY WEIGHT OF 2-METHYLPENTANE AND 10 TO 34% BY WEIGHT OF AT LEAST ONE LOWER ALCOHOL WITH 1 TO 3 CARBON ATOMS CONTAINING AT LEAST 85% BY WEIGHT OF ETHYL ALCOHOL TO THEREBY EXHIBIT AZEOTROPIC OR AZEOTROPE-LIKE CHARACTERISTICS. THE ABOVE CLEANING IS ADVANTAGEOUS FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF NONHAZARDOUSNESS TO HUMAN, SMELL, DIRT REMOVAL, QUALITY FINISHING, RUNNING COST AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. (FIG. 3)
