IN A POSITION DETECTING APPARATUS FOR AN ELEVATOR, BATTERY BACKUP POWER IS PROVIDED TO SUCCESSIVELY SUPPLY POWER INSTEAD OF A POWER SUPPLY UNIT IN CASE OF OCCURRENCE OF A POWER FAILURE OR WHEN AN OUTPUT LEVEL OF THE POWER SUPPLY UNIT IS BELOW A PREDETERMINED LEVEL, SO THAT A RELATIVE POSITION OF THE ELEVATOR CAGE (1) CAN BE CONTINUOUSLY DETECTED WITHOUT CEASE. WHEN THE POWER SUPPLY IS RESUMED AFTER THE POWER FAILURE, THE CAGE (1) IS OPERATED IN THE SAME TRAVELLING DIRECTION AS THAT BEFORE THE POWER FAILURE, ACCORDING TO WHICH IF AN ABSOLUTE POSITION IS DETECTED BY AN ADJACENT ABSOLUTE POSITION DETECTING DEVICE (57), THE ABSOLUTE POSITION AND THE RELATIVE POSITION ARE TOGETHER CONSIDERED TO IMMEDIATELY RESUME THE NORMAL OPERATION OF THE ELEVATOR.
