THE SURFACE SHEET (1) FOR AN ABSORBENT ARTICLE ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION IS CHARACTERIZED IN THAT THE SURFACE SHEET COMPRISES NONWOVEN FABRIC HAVING A PLURALITY OF ALTERNATE RIDGES (2) AND GROOVES (4) SO AS TO HAVE NO FLAT PORTION, THE RIDGES HAVING A CURVED SURFACE TO PROVIDE CONVEXITY WHILE THE GROOVES HAVING A CURVED SURFACE TO PROVIDE CONCAVITY, AND THE GROOVES HAVING A PLURALITY OF PERFORATIONS (6) AT INTERVALS,A RATIO OF THE BULK SOFTNESS IN THE DIRECTION PARALLEL TO THE RIDGES AND GROOVES (MD) TO THE BULK SOFTNESS IN THE DIRECTION PERPENDICULAR TO THE RIDGES AND GROOVES (CD),MD/CD, BEING 1.7 OR MORE; THE BULK SOFTNESS IN THE CD BEING 12 G OR LESS; AND THE THICKNESS T OF THE SURFACE SHEET UNDER A LOAD OF 0.5 G/CM² BEING 0.7 MM OR MORE.(FIG 3)
