Abstract

A SLIDING GATE OPERATOR CONSISTS OF A PRIMARY UNIT (2) WHICH IS FIXED TO A NONMOVEABLE POST (6) AND A SECONDARY BAR (4) WHICH IS ATTACHED TO A GATE FRAME (8). THE PRIMARY UNIT COMPRISES ONE LINEAR INDUCTION MOTOR (LIM) PRIMARY (26) AND A CO-OPERATING TILT-ABLE BACK IRON (30).THE LIM PRIMARY AND THE TILT-ABLE BACK IRON ARE POSITIONED WITH AIR-GAPS, ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE SECONDARY BAR (4) SUCH THAT NO CONTACT EXISTS BETWEEN THEM AND THE SECONDARY BAR. WHEN ELECTRICAL POWER OF APPROPRIATE FREQUENCY IS FED TO THE LIM PRIMARY (26), IT ATTRACTS THE TILT-ABLE BACK IRON (30) AND UNLOCKS THE GATE. THE MAGNETIC FIELD ALSO INDUCES A FORCE ON THE SECONDARY BAR (4) WHICH CAUSES THE GATE TO MOVE IN THE DESIRED DIRECTION. A BRAKING ARRANGEMENT (72, 74) TO REDUCE IMPACT COMES INTO PLAY WHEN THE GATE APPROACHES THE CLOSED POSITION. THE SAME DEVICE IS ALSO CAPABLE TO LOCK THE GATE IN THE CLOSED POSITION.(FIG 2)
