Abstract

A MEMS CAPACITIVE SENSOR (100) FOR MEASURING SMALL PRESSURE CHANGES IS DISCLOSED. THE PRESENT INVENTION MEASURES IOP OF THE EYES TO DETECT THE RISKS OF GLAUCOMA. THE CAPACITIVE SENSOR (100) COMPRISES OF A PAIR OF PARALLEL PLATES (110, 120) THAT FORM A THIN LAYER MEMBRANE. THE FIRST PLATE (110) IS ESSENTIALLY A FLEXIBLE MEMBRANE WHILE THE SECOND PLATE (120) IS A COUNTER MEMBRANE, SUBSTANTIALLY HELD RIGID BY A SUBSTRATE (190). THE CAPACITIVE SENSOR (100) ALSO COMPRISES A DIELECTRIC (130) ACCOMMODATED BETWEEN AND WITHIN THE PLATES (110, 120) WITH THE FIRST PLATE (110) BEING CONNECTED PERIPHERALLY TO THE SECOND PLATE (120) THUS ENCLOSING THE DIELECTRIC (130). THE CAPACITIVE SENSOR (100) FURTHER COMPRISES AT LEAST TWO CONDUCTIVE ELEMENTS (140, 150) THAT IS EMBEDDED WITHIN A SEALING MATRIX (170) AND PROTRUDES FROM THE SURFACE (101) OF THE SEALING MATRIX (170) TO CONNECT TO A MEASUREMENT MEANS (160) TO MEASURE THE CAPACITANCE ACROSS THE PLATES (110, 120).
