Abstract

THE PRESENT INVENTION PROVIDES AN IMPROVED WASTEWATER TREATMENT APPARATUS THAT INCLUDES A BIOFILTER (100) HAVING A SEDIMENTATION TANK (101) DISPOSED WITH A PLURALITY OF COMPARTMENTS (4A ? 4L) CONTAINING FILL MATERIALS THAT FUNCTION AS SUBSTRATE FOR MICROBIAL GROWTH AND AS ENTRAPMENT MEDIA TO TRAP SUSPENDED SOLIDS. WATER UNDERGOING TREATMENT IS FED INTO THE TANK (101) AND FLOWS FROM ONE COMPARTMENT TO AN ADJACENT COMPARTMENT, IN WHICH IT PASSES THROUGH A VARIETY OF FILL MATERIALS THAT CONTAIN SUPPORT MATERIAL FOR THE GROWTH OF MICROORGANISMS, THUS, CREATING FAVORABLE CONDITIONS FOR MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES INSIDE THE FILTER (100). MICROBES LIVING ON SURFACES OF THE FILL MATERIAL CONSUME ORGANIC MATERIALS IN THE WASTEWATER AS NUTRITION, WHEREUPON THE WASTEWATER IS PURIFIED AS IT PASSES THROUGH THE FILTER (100). THE BASIC IDEA OF THE PRESENT INVENTION AND ITS DISTINGUISHED FEATURE COMPARED TO THE PRIOR ART IS THAT THERE IS A SEPARATION OF MICROORGANISMS AND THE TREATED WASTEWATER, WHEREBY MICROORGANISMS ARE IMMOBILIZED WHEN THEY FORM BIOFILMS ON SURFACES OF THE FILTERING MATERIALS.
