Abstract

The present invention relates to a bioactive composition comprising an extract, active fraction or mixture thereof of a species from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) for use against the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The composition comprises an extract and/or active fraction derived from Curcuma heyneana, Boesenbergia rotunda, Curcuma zedoria or mixture thereof as the active ingredient. The active ingredients exhibit melanin inhibition activity, are non-toxic and stable as skin photoprotective agents. They are also able to down-regulate MMP-1 expression in delaying skin photoaging process.
