The present invention discloses a cooling tower with a planar screen (110) disposed across the cross-sectional flow area of the chimney (102) and held horizontally by a support means (116), thereby preventing or reducing the likelihood of penetration of cool or turbulent atmospheric air into the chimney passage and at the same time enhancing the outflow of ascending air through the upper end of the chimney (102).
