Abstract

A method of extracting and concentrating phytosterol from phytosterol-rich by-products (100) is disclosed, wherein the method (100) includes the steps of (a) selecting a feed material (102); (b) subjecting the feed material to a solid-liquid extraction process at a temperature in a range of 35?C to 40?C to yield an extracted product (104); (c) subjecting the extracted product to a reaction process in a 10% ethanolic basic solution(106) at a reflux temperature in a range of 60?C to 80?C for a duration of 30 to 90 minutes; (d) extracting unsaponifiable material by conducting a liquid extraction using non-polar solvent (108); (e) conducting a neutralization process using a non-reacting liquid such as water until neutral pH is obtained (110); and (f) conducting a product purification process via crystallization of product as obtained from step (e) using single solvent wherein ratio between a solvent to the feed material is 10:1 (mass to volume ratio) and the feed material to basic reactant is 2:1 (mass ratio), further wherein a solvent used is a hydrocarbon solvent at a minimum 5 extraction cycles.
