Abstract
The present invention described a method for preparing a hydrogel formulation, said method comprising the following steps: (a) forming a mixture of 20-40% (w/w%) chicken feather keratin in polymer solution; (b) pouring the resulting mixture into a dish to a desired thickness; and (c) subjecting the mixture to repeated freezing and thawing cycle until a hydrogel is formed, wherein the polymer solution comprises a mixture of synthetic polymer and a bio-polymer, and wherein each freezing is carried out at -83C for 1 hour followed by thawing at room temperature for 1 hour. The hydrogel formulation, when used as a wound dressing, renders high absorption, contours to a wound site and maintains the wound in a moist state to promote healing thereof.
