Abstract

The present invention provides a method for producing a xylan-containing composition, a method for producing a glucan-containing composition, and a method for producing glucose. A herbaceous biomass is heat treated with an alkali in an amount of 8 parts by mass or more and 70 parts by mass or less and water in an amount of 10 parts by mass or more and 10,000 parts by mass or less relative to 100 parts by mass of a solid content of the herbaceous biomass in an H-factor in the range of 3 or more and 3,000 or less, thereby obtaining an alkaline primary treated biomass. The alkaline primary treated biomass is subjected to an immersion treatment in an aqueous solution of an alkali in a concentration of 6% by mass or more and 60% by mass or less at 0?C or higher and 50?C or lower, thereby obtaining an alkaline secondary treated biomass. A water-soluble component of the alkaline treated biomass is taken out to obtain a xylan-containing composition, a water-insoluble component of the alkaline secondary treated biomass is taken out to separate a glucan-containing composition, and the glucan-containing composition is saccharified with an enzyme, thereby obtaining glucose.
