Abstract

The present invention provides an impact energy attenuating device (150) comprising a base portion (10); a rail portion (15) disposed and extending along a length of the base portion (10); and an energy absorbing module (120) slidably disposed on the rail portion (15). The energy absorbing module (120) comprises a damping mechanism that includes an inertial member (100) for supporting and maintaining the energy absorbing module (120) on the rail portion; a spring member (36) housed within the inertial member (100) and maintained in resistive physical communication with a bumper element (20) via an axially extending member (35), extending axially away from the inertial member (100); and a friction member (40) coupled to the inertial member (100) and configured to resist sliding motion of the inertial member (100) along the rail portion (15).(Figure 1)
