Abstract
The present invention provides a process for treating vegetable oil refinery effluent (VORE), the process including the steps of separating and removing fatty matters from VORE using a fat trap (1) at a pH level of between 4 to 7 and at a temperature range of between 40?C to 60?C, flocculating (2) the effluent substantially free of fat using at least one polymer, removing suspended solids as contained in the flocculated effluent by dissolved air floatation or induced air floatation (3), mixing the partially treated effluent with at least one electrolyte (4) at pH level <7, delivering the ionised partially treated effluent to an electro-oxidation cell (5) at a voltage of between 1V to 10 V to produce a treated effluent or an active oxidizing agent at pH level >6 and removing precipitate and/or suspended solids from the treated effluent using a filtration means (6), wherein the precipitate and/or suspended solids are metal oxides such as iron oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide or sodium oxide to produce a fully treated effluent with COD levels <80 ppm, pH levels between 6-9 and content of suspended solids <50 mg/L.
